3D Blu-ray Disc Player Households Now Available Online
October 20, 2010

  • BD household numbers now broken out by specification profile
  • Separate datasets available for 3D BD players, BD Live players, etc.

Following extensive co-operation between Screen Digest's Video and TV Technology teams. Screen Digest has modelled the split between the various Blu-ray Disc (BD) player profiles that have formed part of the official BD specification to date, namely:

  • Grace Period (Profile 1.0)
  • Bonus View (Profile 1.1)
  • BD Live (Profile 2.0)
  • 3D BD (Profile 5.0)

The datasets, which include both historic and forecast data, are shown net of any overlap. In other words, BD households are quantified according to the highest profile player owned.

The new household numbers show player profiles at the time of purchase. Screen Digest understands that some Grace Period and Bonus View machines could be upgraded to make them compliant with their immediately successor. However in the absence of any information about take-up, no provision for such home upgrades can be made. BD Live (Profile 2.0) players cannot be upgraded to provide 3D playback.

Video Intelligence subscribers should note that the 3D Blu-ray player household number does not include PS3 games consoles, although these can now be updated via shareware to play 3D BDs. Games console data may be accessed elsewhere in Video Intelligence or via Screen Digest's Games Intelligence service.

The new data may be accessed either 'by territory' (for all territories for which BD data is available) or 'by subject'. Underlying shipment and sales data and forecasts for Grace Period, Bonus View, BD Live and 3D BD players will be uploaded to Screen Digest's TV Technology Intelligence service in the near future.
