The update to the smartphone forecasts takes into account the recently announced Nokia-Microsoft strategic partnership and its impact on the different operating systems.
Key points of this update include:
- The strategic alliance will impact negatively Nokia's smartphone shipments, not only in market share, but also in absolute smartphone shipment numbers;
- To drive growth IHS Screen Digest expects the average selling price (ASP) of Windows Phone Nokia handsets to fall quickly under €200:
- The rapid phasing out of Symbian will create a "vacuum" in the 2011-2013 period that will mostly benefit other OS, and especially (but not only) Android
- In some countries with a historically high Symbian market share, the actual number of smartphone shipments might drop in the same period. This is due to Symbian's limited usage in some markets despite its classification as a smartphone; in other words, some Symbian handsets see little "smartphone" usage due, among other factors, to the absence of tied data plans.
- For those reasons, upcoming Windows Phone Nokia smartphones should see higher transaction levels per handset than currently witnessed with Symbian.
